Alphabet Inc's Google said on Tuesday it would roll out a mobile YouTube application designed for India, boosting the search company's presence in a burgeoning market with spotty Internet access. Since the fall, Google has been conducting extensive tests in India of YouTube Go, which allows users to save videos to watch offline and monitor their data use.
A beta version of the app has been released in the Google Play Store in India, and will be released in other emerging markets later, company executives said in an interview.
Youtube go on andriod
Google-owned YouTube will now let users download videos through its recently-launched YouTube Go app. The app is available for download from the Google Play Store, but is rolling out to limited users based on early access programme. YouTube Go allows downloading of videos directly to the smartphone's internal memory or the microSD card for offline viewing. While the app works similarly to YouTube's primary app, it prompts users to download videos instead of streaming them online.
For now, videos can be downloaded in two resolutions - 144p (Basic) and 360p (Standard). Downloading in HD quality isn't available yet.
The downloaded videos can also be shared with other users using Bluetooth. As mentioned in the app listing, YouTube Go requires internet access in order to perform a 15kb security check, once the video has been downloaded. The new video-streaming service adds to the company's long term goal of making internet accessible to the 'Next Billion' users in India and enhancing the Google experience for them. YouTube Go is claimed to have been built from the ground-up, keeping Indian users in mind. At the time of showcasing the app, Google said that YouTube Go app will show trending videos right on the homescreen. The section highlights the most trending or popular videos in the user's geographical area. However, the location services need to be turned on for that. Google said that YouTube Go was created after a team of engineers and designers carried an extensive research in 15 cities across India. The app has been designed to be offline-first and can work not just in low connectivity areas, even when where there's no internet connection. YouTube Go in India may witness a lot of Indian users flocking towards it because of its data-saving features. Although the company already has features like smart offline video saving, the new app is likely to penetrate deeper into the Indian market.
